About Bonaire
Bonaire is located in the south of the Caribbean at 12 degrees north of the equator, far out of the reach of the hurricanes. As the newest Dutch municipality it is home to about 20,000 people and almost as many flamingos.
Bonaireans are known as the friendliest people in the Caribbean. Most Bonaireans are of African descent, with Dutch and Portuguese influences. Almost everyone speaks the English language.
The average temperature on Bonaire is about 29 degrees and the sun shines almost every day. The heat is well tolerated because there is almost always a cooling east wind blowing.
Wild goats and donkeys walk around freely, looking for edible green.
Noisy green parrots fly back and forth and sit on the tops of the cacti. Furthermore, large iguanas and small lizards can be seen on the ground.
Bonaire’s scant landscapes are in contrast to her spectacular underwater world, full of colorful corals and exotic fish. Through strict management of the underwater park, Bonaire has become a favorite destination for divers and snorkelers. The constant wind also makes Bonaire an ideal destination for surfers, kite surfers and sailors.
Enonomy
Tourism and salt extraction are the pillars of the Bonairean economy. In the north there is a small storage terminal for petroleum. Supermarkets and other shops are sufficiently present and usually a short distance from the hotels and apartments.
Dining in one of the many good restaurants on Bonaire is a culinary experience. There is a wide choice of different international cuisines or of course the excellent Bonairian cuisine. The prices are pleasant. Easy clothing is sufficient for the nightlife of Bonaire. There are several bars, terraces and even casinos. Every day there is live music somewhere!
